Australian Wingless Sprint Championship history was created tonight at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, when Joel Chadwick became the first back-to-back winner in the event’s 10-year history.

After winning the previous night’s preliminary feature race in impressive fashion, Chadwick, whose back-to-back wins is now five Australian Championships for the state of South Australia (adding to that tally are Chadwick’s double, Todd Wigzell’s pair of wins in 2012 and 2015 and Rory Button’s inaugural win in 2009), started from the outside of the front row for the 2018 Australian Championship deciding feature race.

L-R Mark Blyton (2nd), Joel Chadwick (1st) and Dean Thomas (3rd)

Photo: Crashy’s Photos

Lined up beside pole sitter and Valvoline Raceway track specialist Mark Blyton (NSW), Chadwick battled for the lead with Blyton before taking full control of the lead after a dozen completed laps. From there, he was never headed for the remainder of the 35-lap event.

Despite the best efforts from Blyton, he had to settle for second behind Chadwick in what turned out to be a career-best finish for the veteran racer in a title event.

In a feature race that impressively went 30 laps without a single caution period, there were two stoppages in the closing stages, which also included a return of the wet weather. Lap 30 saw the race brought to a halt after heavy contact between David Eggins (NSW) and two-time Australian Super Sedan Champion Peter Logue (Vic) on the main straight resulted in Logue, who had earlier won the B main, crashing into the outer tyre wall. Both drivers weren’t injured but they were retirements.

As they say in motorsport, caution periods breed caution periods, and that’s exactly what occurred, when three laps later, youngster and Valvoline Raceway newcomer Matthew Iwanow (WA), who was running in eighth place after qualifying fifth, spun around entering turn four and sustained race-ending damage in the process, while Anthony Tapley (SA) also spun in the incident. While Iwanow was sidelined, Tapley was able to restart at the tail of the field.

With a two-lap sprint to the chequered flag, the rain began to fall, and that certainly created yet another challenge for Chadwick as he came up to tackle the green, white, chequer. Handling the pressure of a greasy, unpredictable track surface with ease, he went on to put together two trouble-free laps and was rewarded with back-to-back Australian Championship wins.

Joel Chadwick

Photo: Crashy’s Photos

While Chadwick and second-placed Blyton greeted the chequered flag without too many dramas, the battle for third place was certainly intense and it was only decided as the drivers raced towards the finish line. In the end, it was current NSW Champion Dean Thomas (NSW), who earlier in the race dropped back towards the foot of the top 10, who stole the final spot on the podium away from Jason Bates (NSW). Bates, the 2016 NSW Champion, was sitting third up until the final corner, when contact from behind slowed him and it allowed the defending Valvoline Raceway Track Champion to pip him for the spot.

Behind Bates in fifth was current Tasmanian Champion Luke Redpath (Tas). After starting from position 8 in tonight’s feature race, Redpath showed plenty of pace throughout the weekend in what was his Valvoline Raceway debut and he was rewarded with a satisfying top-five result.

A position 13 starting Travis Millar (Vic), one of the weekend’s surprise packets Andy Hibbert (Vic), current Northern Territory Champion Troy Carey (NSW) charged home from position 15, two-time Australian Champion Daniel Hartigan (WA) and impressive Kyle Mock (NSW) rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Troy Carey (NSW) battles with Matthew Symons (Vic)

Photo: Crashy’s Photos

The remaining finishers consisted of Luke Sayre (NSW), Clint McLaren (Vic), Peter Granger (NSW), current Queensland Champion Daniel Flood (NSW), Glenn Wright (Qld), Matthew Symons (Vic), Luke Weel (Vic), current Victorian Champion Glenn Watts (Vic), Tapley and Michael McDonald (Vic).

Apart from Eggins, Logue and Iwanow, the only other Australian Championship decider retirement was Jeff Thomas (NSW), who had started from position 3, and retired on lap 14, due to a fuel pump failure.

Mother nature reared its ugly head during the middle of tonight’s racing, when it brought the night’s proceedings to a stop, due to wet weather front, for over an hour following the completion of the fourth and final round of heat races.

Earlier in the night, the heat-race wins were claimed by Peter Logue, Chris Halesworth (Vic), Carly Walsh (Vic), Watts, David Cook (Vic), Eggins, Weel and Tony Moule (Vic). In the fourth and final round of heat races, it saw seven of the eight winners reside in the state of Victoria.

In the march to the Australian Championship deciding feature race, following the rain delay, the E main was claimed by Shaun Lyness (Vic), the D-main win went the way of Leighton O’Brien (NSW), following the family’s winning form was Mitchell O’Brien (NSW) who drove to victory in the C main, and the final four Australian Championship decider spots on offer in the B main were filled by Peter Logue, who drove to a hard-charging race to win ahead of fellow transferees: Wright, Weel and McDonald. The biggest incident from these last-chance events occurred in the D main, when Steve Thomas (NSW) rode out a huge wreck on lap five in between turns three and four. Although the eldest of the Thomas siblings wasn’t injured, the same couldn’t be said for his car which was destroyed.

Please Note: All Australian Championship results are to remain unofficial, up until engine checks are completed, which are required to be done within a 21-day period.

Appreciation Post: The entire Australian Wingless Sprint Racing committee would like to thank the drivers, pit crews, supporters, officials from the Sprintcar Association of NSW and the Valvoline Raceway team, for their wonderful efforts throughout the weekend that helped make this season’s Australian Championship one of the best.

Ahead of the 2018 Australian Wingless Sprints Championship, which is set to commence tonight with the opening night of competition at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, Totally Speedway’s Daniel Powell shares his top-10 contenders.

Luke Redpath (Tas)
As the one of the few drivers amongst the field who have never visited the Valvoline Raceway track before, track experience isn’t on Redpath’s side; however, the current Tasmanian Champion was a force to be reckoned with in last season’s Australian Championship, coming home in a strong second place. While track time certainly isn’t an issue for him, having contested a busy schedule this season between Wingless Sprints, Speedcars and Speedway Karts and collected a total of 8 feature-race wins so far this season, will Redpath be race hardened for the 90 plus competitors he’s soon to face?

Jason Martin (NSW)
The big question mark heading into the Australian Championship is no doubt Martin, who recently exceeded expectations and delivered a career best performance in the NSW Title, coming from eighth in the pole shuffle to start the feature race on the outside of the front row and going on to complete the podium in third. Hungry to prove his impressive performance was no fluke, Martin showed that he wasn’t afraid to go up against the country’s best drivers, but can he back it up under the pressure of the Australian Championship?

Luke Weel (Vic)
Despite not having much experience at the Sydney venue, Weel, who is regarded as one of the country’s fastest racers, has proven that he can qualify well in title events, having earned pole position in the previous two Australian Championships – Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway and Carrick Speedway – but has been unable to go on with the job. Showing good speed in his past visits to the track, the most recent of which was the NSW Title where he placed 13th due to experiencing dramas throughout his heat races, Weel will be hoping that the third time’s the charm as he shoots for a hat trick of Australian Championship pole position starts. However, on this occasion, he wants to finish the weekend on the top step of the podium.

Daniel Hartigan (WA)
As a two-time Australian Champion, it’s hard not to include Hartigan in our predictions. Making the long trek to Valvoline Raceway for the first time in his career to contest the NSW Title, where he was running strongly inside the top-10 up until an incident with another driver towards the end of race resulted in him spinning out and being sent ROF. Despite the disappointing end to his NSW Title campaign, he showed great pace for a driver who had never seen the track before and he certainly won’t let his lack of track experience get in the way of his hunt for Australian Championship win # 3.

Luke Sayre (NSW)
In a class where consistency is vital, Sayre has definitely been hitting his marks this season, with a feature-race win at Gilgandra Speedway and two minor podium finishes at Valvoline Raceway under his belt. Currently sitting third in the NSW Club Championship point standings, the 18-year-old racer was disappointed to run 11th in the NSW Title and will be looking to make amends in the Australian Championship. If he can qualify strongly, he’ll no doubt be a threat.

David Eggins (NSW)
A regular front-runner on a domestic level, with four-feature race wins to his name this season, Lismore’s Eggins is one of the form drivers in Northern NSW. Having his best ever run at Valvoline Raceway with a pleasing fourth place in the NSW Title, this result will give Eggins a good foundation for a strong Australian Championship performance.

Joel Chadwick (SA)
Recently being forced to qualify for the NSW Title feature race via the B main after a crash during his heat races, going on to salvage a top-10 finish, Chadwick is another example of why a strong qualifying result is so important. While he may have limited Valvoline Raceway track experience, the defending Australian Champion knows just how to handle the pressure of a title event and will leave nothing in the tank in his attempt to claim back-to-back wins.

Jason Bates (NSW)
After qualifying on pole for the NSW Title and ultimately slipping back to eighth, Bates will be determined to bounce back in the Australian Championship. Carrying the confidence of having won the 2016 NSW Title at the Sydney track, along with a multiple feature races, Bates will without a doubt be a contender, so be sure to keep an eye on the green machine!

Mark Blyton (NSW)
At a place where experience counts for everything, we certainly can’t forget about veteran racer Blyton, who has completed more laps around Valvoline Raceway than any other driver, having made his first appearance at the track in the early 1990s. After challenging for the lead in the NSW Title before being forced to settle for the runner-up spot when his car setup dropped off in the latter stages of the race, Blyton will be hungry to go one better in the Australian Championship and achieve his maiden Australian Championship victory.

Dean Thomas (NSW)
All eyes will be on Thomas during the Australian Championship, after his impressive and dominant victory in the recent NSW Title. As the current Valvoline Raceway Track Champion, all thoughts lead to Thomas running at the pointy end of the Australian Championship feature-race field, but his rivals certainly won’t make it easy!

Honourable Mentions: current Australia # 3 Daniel Storer (Vic), current Victorian Champion and Australia # 4 Glenn Watts (Vic), current Northern Territory Champion Troy Carey (NSW), current Queensland Champion Daniel Flood (NSW), Matthew Iwanow (WA), Travis Millar (Vic), Harley Smee (NSW), Ashleigh Jack (NSW), Peter Logue (Vic), Peter Granger (NSW) and Jason Davis (NSW).

The above top-10 predictions are just a guide and only just scratch the surface in terms of the number of likely front-runners. All we know is that the 2018 Australian Championship will no doubt be an action packed and extremely competitive event!

Event Information: Having commenced yesterday with scrutineering and the Calcutta, the opening night of Australian Championship competition commences tonight with hot laps, three rounds of heat races and a preliminary feature race, followed by the fourth and final round of heat races, the D main, C main, B main and the Australian Championship-deciding feature race tomorrow night.

It’s going to be extremely tough to beat the NSW natives in this weekend’s Australian Wingless Sprints Championship at Valvoline Raceway, with a whopping 59 contenders hoping that their home state advantage will be enough to win them top honours.

Having just taken out the NSW Title at the Sydney venue, conquering a 60-strong field to do so, all eyes will be on newly-crowned NSW Champion Dean Thomas, with the current Valvoline Raceway Track Champion being in the best possible form to clinch another pleasing result. Joining Dean in the nominations will be two of his brothers, Jeff and Steve, with the trio hoping to do their family proud.

Photo: Lone Wolf Photography

Veteran Mark Blyton has been in strong from throughout the 2017-18 season so far, having collected two feature-race victories and a handful of minor podium results, and he will be looking to convert this form into a strong Australian Championship result, while 2016 NSW Champion Jason Bates will be out to prove himself, having been very competitive this season despite not recording a feature-race win, along with current Northern Territory Champion Troy Carey.

Luke Sayre, Peter Granger and Ashleigh Jack have each experienced success this season, with a feature-race win apiece, which they’ll be hoping to continue when they take to the Valvoline Raceway track, while surprise packet Jason Martin will be one of the underdogs heading into the event, having recently achieved his career-best result with a third-place finish in the NSW Title.

After a disappointing premature retirement in the recent NSW Title, Sean Dicker will be hoping to turn his luck around in the Australian Championship, while his brother Jamie, who recently finished an impressive fifth in the NSW Title, is going to be right amongst the front runners. Rewarded with his second career feature-race win earlier this season, youngster Harley Smee will be hoping to continue his momentum and come away with a pleasing Australian Title result, while previous minor podium finisher this season Jason Davis and father and son duo Graham and Daniel Flood will also be in attendance. The latter being the current Queensland Champion.

Northern NSW will be strongly represented, with 2016 Queensland Champion Trent Martin leading a group of contenders, which includes David Eggins, Robert Mazzer, veteran Mick Santin, Michael Butcher, Warren King and Natasha Herne, into battle.

Lou Pacchiarotta will be joined in the Australian Title field by his nephew Zac, while 2012 Australian Title podium finisher (third) and a recent returning driver to the class Joel Rhind, veteran Brian Briton, Sean Mayo, Kyle Mock, John McRae, Kyle Angel, Parker Eveleigh, Jamison Blyton (Mark’s son), O’Brien brothers Mitch and Leighton, Jeff Neve, Darryl Marshall, Troy Baker and Geoff Piekar are all aiming to run strongly throughout the heat races in the hope of giving themselves the best chance of qualifying into the feature race.

Completing the NSW nominations are Tyson Williams, Mitchell Pyne, Max Risbridger, Cody Boulding, Coby Elliott, Jacqui Salmon, Andrew Seery, Lawrence McDougall, Shane Chippindale, Nick Tatnell, Mitch Manning, Drew Hillman, Kyle and Jack Ionn, Jarrad Rust, Michael Gray, John Newman, Brock Gardiner, Wayne Arnold and Simon Bestmann.

The Australian Championship will be held over three nights, beginning on Thursday (February 1) with scrutineering during the day and the Calcutta at night. The following night (February 2) will see drivers hit the track to contest hot laps, three rounds of heat races and a preliminary feature race, with the fourth and final round of heat races, the D main, C main, B main and the Australian Championship-deciding feature race to be held on the Saturday night (February 3).

In what was a hotly-contested 2017-18 season NSW Wingless Sprint Title at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway last Saturday night, it was local front-runner Dean Thomas who managed to come away with the winning spoils.

With the sizeable field of over 60 drivers each hoping to achieve a solid result ahead of the upcoming Australian Championship at the Sydney venue in less than a fortnight, Thomas, who is the defending Valvoline Raceway Track Champion, was rapt to claim the NSW Title crown in what he hopes will be a precursor to another winning outcome.

Photo: Gary Reid

While it was Thomas who greeted the chequered flag in first place at the completion of the 25-lap feature race, it was 2016 NSW Champion Jason Bates who took the early lead, capitalising on his pole position start to control the pace out in front for the opening five laps. Bates then became involved in a battle with Thomas, who had come from position four, which saw the pair trade positions multiple times before Thomas ultimately managed to pip Bates for good, going on to lead for the remainder of the distance to take a convincing victory.

Powering forward from position 10, a brilliant drive from veteran Mark Blyton delivered him with a pleasing runner-up finish, after making his way up to third place in the opening stages and later moving into second place with seven laps to go. Despite putting the pressure on Thomas, Blyton was unable to make a passing move, with his car seeming to drop off in the latter half of the race.

It was a special night for Lithgow, NSW-based surprise packet Jason Martin, who experienced a career-best performance to qualify on the outside of the front row amongst a stout field of competitors, eventually coming home in a hard-fought third place, ahead of Lismore’s David Eggins and a fast finishing Jamie Dicker, who had started from position 13, in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Next across the finish line in sixth was current Northern Territory Champion Troy Carey ahead of Ashleigh Jack, Bates, who slipped back from second to eighth in the closing 10 laps, Victorian Travis Millar and current Australian Champion Joel Chadwick in 10th. A special mention must go to Chadwick, who did well to salvage a top-10 finish, after a DNF due to a crash in his second heat race saw him start towards the back of the feature-race field after being forced to earn his feature-race start via the B main.

Remaining finishers were Luke Sayre, Jason Davis, Luke Weel, Michael Butcher, Kevin Willis, Mitchell O’Brien, Peter Granger, Jarrad Rust, Daniel Hartigan (WA), Brian Briton and Kyle Angel.

Hartigan, the two-time Australian Champion and first-time Valvoline Raceway visitor, was fighting for a top-five finish with about 10 laps to go, when there was contact in turn two from another rival and it resulted in him spinning out and being order to the rear of the field for the restart. Another interstate challenger, Weel endured a tough night and, like Chadwick, had to earn his feature-race field by qualifying through the B main due to dramas in the earlier heat races and went on to finish in 13th. There’s no doubt that the likes of Chadwick and Weel are aiming to start higher up in the feature-race field, so that they can enhance their Australian Championship chances in less than a fortnight’s time.

After transferring into the feature race via the B main, 2016 NSW Title runner-up finisher Jeff Thomas hopes came to crashing halt on the opening lap, while Sean Dicker retired after only 11 laps, followed by Leighton O’Brien, whose feature-race run ended just three laps from the finish.

Earlier in the night, the heat-race action saw no drivers score multiple victories, with wins being shares between Granger, Butcher, Angel, Eggins, Chadwick, Martin, Millar, Bates, Leighton O’Brien and Dean Thomas. After being involved in a large crash during heat-race nine, which resulted in five drivers experiencing DNFs, Victorian Clint McLaren was transferred to hospital for investigation into a lower back injury. McLaren was released from nearby Westmead Hospital yesterday morning with no major injury concerns and is now resting back at his home in Geelong.

In B main 1, Mitchell O’Brien came home in first place ahead of Chadwick, Jeff Thomas and Weel, while Sean Dicker was the best in B main 2, taking the win ahead of Briton, Willis and Rust.

Bates emerged on top in the pole shuffle to secure his pole position start in the feature race, with Martin locking out the front row. Eggins and Dean Thomas secured their second row starting positions, ahead of Hartigan and Millar on the third row, while Angel and Sayre completed the fourth-row starters.

Drivers will now prepare to return to Valvoline Raceway, along with an additional 37 contenders from all over the country, for the coveted Australian Championship, which will be held over three days on February 1-3.

Dean Thomas has yet again excelled the field on Saturday night at Valvoline Raceway and charged home to win the 2018 NSW Wingless Sprints Championship.

Thomas started from position four in the twenty-five lap main event and on lap nine took the lead and worked overtime to build up a big gap.

Such was the domination, there was a gap of almost two seconds back to second placed Mark Blyton.

The veteran came from ninth on the grid to score a podium finish and signal an ominous warning to his competitors for the upcoming Australian Title. It is interesting to note about the Dubbo-based driver is that by lap three he was up to third, where he stayed until lap nineteen, when he moved into second.

Third was Jason Martin. In a race that impressed a lot of people, Martin was on fire all night, in just his third Parramatta meeting of the season, blasting through the pole shuffle to secure a front row start for the final. After spending the majority of the race in fourth, he made his move into third with just five laps remaining.

Fourth was NSW Northern Rivers based David Eggins and fifth was Jamie Dicker who has had a very consistent season to date.

Rounding out the top ten was Troy Carey followed by Ashleigh Jack, Jason Bates, Travis Millar and current Australian Champion Joel Chadwick. The South Aussie had his hands full all night having to come from the B-Main.

Luke Sayre was eleventh home followed by Jason Davis, Victorian Luke Wheel, Michael Butcher, Kevin Willis, Mitchell O’Brien, Peter Granger, Jarrad Rust, Daniel Hartigan, Brian Briton and Kyle Angel was the final finisher.

Non finishers were Leighton O’Brien, Sean Dicker and Jeff Thomas.

It was the worst possible start for Jeff Thomas, getting upside down on the first corner of the main event. He emerged ok from the car.

Earlier in the night ten heat races were contested. Wins went the way of Peter Granger, Michael Butcher, Kyle Angel, David Eggins, Joel Chadwick, Jason Martin, Travis Millar, Jason Bates, Leighton O’Brien and Dean Thomas.

The winners of the two B-Mains were Mitchell O’Brien and Sean Dicker.

The next event for the NSW Wingless Sprints will be the 2018 AWSR Australian Championship on Friday and Saturday, February 2 and 3 at Valvoline Raceway.

This Saturday night’s NSW Wingless Sprints Title at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway is sure to produce a thrilling spectacle when over 60 drivers will strive to outpace their rivals to earn top honours in the event.

Ahead of the upcoming Australian Championship which will also be taking place at the premier Sydney venue early next month, the NSW Title will offer drivers the perfect opportunity to gain some valuable experience on the track, and with such an impressive list of nominations, they’ll get a taste of the action they’re sure to encounter come February.

With last season’s NSW Title champion Adam Butler having made the move to 410 Sprintcars this season, a new champion is guaranteed on Saturday night. Last season’s runner-up and local Luke Sayre will surely be one to watch as he attempts to go one better to claim the crown, as will fourth-place finisher Daniel Flood, who won his maiden state title last season, taking out the Queensland Title at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway.

Having tasted victory in the rescheduled 2016 NSW Title at the beginning of last season, which was also hosted by Valvoline Raceway, Sydney’s Jason Bates knows exactly what it takes to win at the track and he will be looking to score title # 2, while regular front-runners Mark Blyton, Jason Davis, and 2016 runner-up Jeff Thomas are set to be right up there.

Off the back of winning the opening NSW Club Championship round in Sydney back in October, Goulburn’s Peter Granger is hoping to carry his winning form with him into Saturday night’s event, with youngster Harley Smee also having tasted victory this season, picking up his first win of the season at Goulburn Speedway, along with last-start winner Ashleigh Jack, who claimed her maiden feature-race victory recently at Nowra Speedway.

Numerous family pairings will be amongst the NSW Title field, with Graham Flood (Daniel’s dad) joining the line-up, along with Jamison Blyton (Mark’s son), fast-paced Dicker brothers Sean and Jamie, O’Brien brothers Mitch and Leighton, current Valvoline Raceway Track Champion Dean and Steve Thomas, who will join their other brother Jeff, and uncle and nephew pair Lou and Zac Pacchiarotta.

Troy Carey, who is the current Northern Territory Champion, is hoping to perform well, along with Sean Mayo, Geoff Piekar, Jeff Neve, Andrew Seery, Troy Baker and youngster Tyson Williams.

David Eggins will head a contingent of Northern NSW-based drivers, which will also include former Queensland Champion Trent Martin, Kevin Willis, Michael Butcher, Warren King, Max Risbridger, Michael Reid, John Newman and Kyle Ionn, while the remaining NSW field will be made up of Brock Gardiner, Cody Boulding, Kyle Angel, Parker Eveleigh, Michael Sammut, Jack Gray, Jason Martin, Kyle Mock, Drew Hillman, Darryl Marshall, Jarrad Rust, veteran Brian Briton, Shane Chippindale, John McRae, Jacqui Salmon, Lawrence McDougall and John Webb.

A small but formidable interstate field will be led by defending Victorian Super Series Champion Luke Weel, with fellow Victorians Travis Millar, who will be piloting the Vic # 2 Fitzpatrick Autosports car, youngster Todd Hobson and Clint McLaren also making the trip up the East Coast in the hopes of stealing the NSW crown.

Flying the flag for South Australia, current Australian and South Australian Champion Joel Chadwick will be hoping for a winning result ahead of his Australian Championship defence at the track in a fortnight, while another Australian Champion in two-time winner Daniel Hartigan will no doubt do everything he can to challenge for the win in what is going to be his Valvoline Raceway debut. Hartigan will be joined by fellow Western Australian representative Mitchell White.

Recently, long-time speedway enthusiast and supporter Dennis ‘DJ’ Walsh was laid to rest following a celebrating of his life at the Cobden Civic Hall.

Born and bred in the south-east Victorian country town of Cobden, DJ had been involved with speedway in many facets since the 1960s and ‘70s when he raced Super Modifieds, later becoming a mentor to his sons Mark (Freddy) and Darren, who both took up Sprintcar racing in the 1990s after stepping out of Dirt Modifieds. DJ also tried his hand at team ownership after his sons stepped away from their driver duties, with American Tommy Tarlton running for him in the early 2000s.

Continuing DJ’s legacy and making him a very proud grandfather, third-generation racers and grandchildren Carly and Blake Walsh, Mark and his wife Tania’s children, went on to commence their own competitive speedway careers, starting out in Junior Sedans where Blake and is currently building a Wingless Sprint for his first taste of the senior ranks, with Carly currently racing Wingless Sprints and 410 Sprintcars.

Not only was the former Sprintcar Racing Association steward committed to the sport of speedway on the track, he was also a stalwart supporter away from it, having been a major influence in making the Wingless Sprints class what it is today through his contributions in the 2009-10 season as a Victorian Nos Sprints committee member, and having been chief steward for the Victorian Wingless Sprints for multiple seasons.

“On behalf of Australian Wingless Sprint Racing, I would like to thank DJ for his commitment to the sport of speedway over the years, especially to the Wingless Sprints class,” expressed current Australian Wingless Sprint Racing President Mick Parry.

“His contribution to our class and this country’s great sport never went unnoticed and were always greatly appreciated.

“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to DJ’s wife Heather, and children Freddy (Mark) and Darren, along with the rest of the Walsh family during this difficult time.”

Ashleigh Jack drove a great race to record her first ever main event win at Nowra Speedway on the NSW south coast on Saturday night.

After sharing the front row with her team mate Luke Sayre for the 25 lap main event, she grabbed the lead in turn one and made sure no one was getting by without a fight.

In the end however, it was a fairy tale finish with Ashleigh leading every lap. Unfortunately the race fell victim to the track’s strict curfew and the race was declared after fifteen laps but that didn’t take anything away from the fantastic win by Jack.

Second to the line was her team mate Luke Sayre and third was Troy Carey. Harley Smee and top points man after the heats, Mark Blyton, rounded out the top five.

Jason Davis was sixth followed by Nathan Dicker, Zac Pachiarotta, Brian Briton and Kyle Mock drove a great race to finish tenth.

Eleventh home was Peter Granger followed by Sean Dicker, Max Risbridger, Jeff Neve and Blake Darcy was the final finisher. Non finishers were Sean Mayo, Jamison Blyton, Troy Baker, Jamie Dicker and Tyson Williams.

The only real major incident of the night occurred on lap nine of the feature when Troy Baker flipped down the main straight. He was ok but sadly the same couldn’t be said for his car.

Eight heats were contested with wins going to Baker, Jamie Dicker, Ashleigh Jack, Jamison Blyton, Sean Mayo, Mark Blyton, Jason Davis and Troy Carey.

B-Main one was a win for Sean Mayo and Sean Dicker won B-Main two.

Mark Blyton was top points and drew an inversion 6 for the feature.

The NSW Wingless Sprints would like to thank all competitors who travelled to Nowra for the event.

The next event on the NSW Wingless Sprints Calendar is the NSW Title on January 20 at Valvoline Raceway. A big car count is expected for the event which is the perfect lead up to the Australian Title on February 2 and 3, also at Valvoline Raceway.
