Bott Civil
Wren Goes The Distance In Mildura

By Phil Michell

With the season beginning to come to an end in the Southern States it hasn’t slowed down the Wingless Sprints SA competitors with two feature events in the last fortnight attracting large car counts at Murray Bridge and the Timmis Speedway in Mildura. The first of the two nights, at Murray Bridge, was in support of the Australian Modified Sedan Championship while Mildura conducted the annual Bott Civil 50 Lapper last Saturday night.

The 50 Lapper saw 29 drivers from across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales sign in for competition with the format including Time Trials, six heat races, a B-Main and the gruelling 50 lap finale.

Despite the best efforts of the local South Australian drivers the A-Main went the way of the extremely talented Victorian Sam Wren who survived the intense pressure of the Australian Champion Joel Chadwick to win the longest South Australian sanctioned race. Third place went to local Mildura resident Travis Beasley with Tony Moule and Anthony Tapley completing the top 5.

Renmark racer Dan Evans was next across the line with Mitchell Broome, Jay Brown, Brad Beasley, Michael Spoljaric, Casey Vanderstelt and Parker Eveleigh the only other finishers,

The night started off in spectacular fashion for Anthony Tapley who set the quickest time in qualifying as he was the only driver to lap the Timmis Speedway in the 15 second bracket stopping the clock at 15.784 seconds. Former Australian 360ci Sprintcar Champion Tony Moule was the next best ahead of Todd Hobson (Vic), Aaron Doe, Robert Heard, Travis Beasley, Dale Gesell and Mitchell Broome.

The heat races then went the way of Sam Wren, Brad Beasley, Robert Heard, Aaron Doe, Ebony Hobson and Tony Moule. Todd Hobson, Spoljaric, Eveleigh and Vanderstelt transferred from the B-Main.

The week prior 23 drivers were at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway at Murray Bridge with Joel Chadwick returning to winners list after failing to secure a win during the three night Easter Trail. Second place went to Anthony Tapley, who has had a strong finish to the season, with Brett Ireland, Dan Evans and Joel Heinrich, who was an excitement machine on the night running the high line, finishing fifth.

Travis Beasley, Joel Chadwick and Anthony Tapley each won a heat race.

The next event on the South Australian Wingless Sprint calendar will be at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie on May 20, 2017.
