The 2016-17 season Powranna Plant Hire Australian Wingless Sprint Championship, which is set to be held at Carrick Speedway in Tasmania this weekend, is going to see a formidable Victorian contingent cross the Bass Strait in an attempt to bring the crown back to the mainland.

With five feature-race wins already under his belt in Victoria, Luke Weel is the state’s form driver and he will be looking to make amends for last season’s Australian Championship result, which saw him qualify on pole position for the feature race before ultimately slipping back to seventh after making the incorrect tyre selection.

Also joining the field will be Glenn Watts, who has banked two feature-race wins this season, most recently at Hamilton’s Western Speedway, along with Mick Parry, who has continued to improve throughout the season, with two recent minor podium finishers under his belt, and veteran racer Tony Moule, who isn’t one to be taken lightly.

Regular front-runner Daniel Storer, who wrapped up the Super Series last season, by virtue of winning three of the six series rounds, will join the field. Storer knows exactly what it takes to win races and he will be hoping to put his experience into practice and improve on his recent results, having suffered from some misfortune this season, resulting in a couple of disappointing DNFs. Daniel’s younger brother, Luke, who recorded his first podium at Portland’s Southern 500 Raceway late last season, will also be amongst the field and will be one to watch, having been named the Most Improved Driver in 2015-16.

Travis Millar is not to be discounted, recently qualifying pole for the South Australian Title at Adelaide Motorsport Park before finishing second, while also visiting victory lane once so far this season. The fast-paced racer will be hoping to improve on his previous Australian Championship efforts, which saw him finish ninth, while veteran and 1997 Australian Super Sedan Champion Peter Logue will also be a contender, as will Victorian-based Leigh Mugavin, who will be piloting the NT # 22 machine.

In her first full season with the class after graduating from Junior Sedans, Carly Walsh will be hoping to gain as much experience as possible in her biggest event yet, along with youngster Ebony Hobson, who will be looking to make her mark. Also joining the field will be Wayne Hurford, Sam Wren, Matthew Symons, Wayne Logue, Mathew Balcombe, Jason Langdon, Geoff Cook and Glen Harris.

The Australian Championship will be held over three days, beginning on Thursday, February 23 with practice and the Calcutta. The following Friday night will see drivers contest the first rounds of heat races and a preliminary feature race, with the remaining heats and Australian Championship-deciding feature race to be held on the Saturday night of February 25. The event offers a whopping prize pool of $22,000, with $4,000 to win.

Two weeks later, Cranes Combined Carrick Speedway will host the Tasmanian Wingless Sprint Title on the Saturday night of March 11.
