In the Wingless Sprints Invitational at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Saturday night, it was Rhys Baxter who took top honours ahead of an impressive field.

Starting out of position eight for the 18-lap feature race, Baxter had some hard work cut out for him. Carving his way through the field, he managed to seize the top spot when pole-sitter Daniel Storer’s car overheated while the yellows were out, forcing him to retire from the race. After a stellar drive, Baxter held on to cross the line in first place ahead of Travis Millar and Peter Logue, who also managed to work his way through the field from ninth.

Wayne Logue and Sam Wren rounded out the top five, while Chris Halesworth, Dayn Bentvelzen, Warrick Taylor, Adin Robertson, Carly Walsh, Mick Parry, Marcus Green, Wayne Hurford, Graham Payne and Marc Evans completed the finishers.

Joining Daniel Storer on the infield was Todd Hobson, Michael Skene, Kris Johnson and Warren Sell, who were unfortunately unable to finish the feature race.

The night began with Nic Green scoring the win in the opening heat race, with remaining heat-race wins awarded to Hurford, Daniel Storer and Marcus Green.

To determine the grid for the feature race, Walsh showed her pace in the C Dash, finishing first ahead of Kris Johnson, with the pair transferring into the B Dash, which then saw Taylor and Wren earn their places in the A Dash.

Daniel Storer and Millar locked out the front row for the feature race after their efforts in the A Dash, with Taylor, Wren, Marcus Green, Luke Storer and Bentvelzen finishing behind them. Baxter suffered a disappointing DNF in the A Dash, however his luck certainly turned around for the all-important feature race.

The next hit out for the Victorian Wingless Sprints will be on November 12 at Nyora Raceway for the opening round of the East Series.
