Wayne Hurford won the second annual Gary Bowden Memorial Cup and also the fifth round of the Velocita Eastern Challenge supported by Cheap Tyres Morwell and Dromana Mowers for Wingless Sprints last Friday and Saturday nights at Rosedale Speedway and Bairnsdale Speedway respectively.

Good Friday night saw then points leader Warrick Taylor win at Rosedale Speedway, which doubled as the fourth round of the Velocita Eastern Challenge, ahead of Peter Logue, Dayn Bentvelzen, with Hurford narrowly off the podium in fourth. Liam Atkinson finished in fifth ahead of Todd Hobson, Samantha Millar, Neil Grey, Thomas McDonald and the final finisher Georgia McLeod.

The following night at Bairnsdale Speedway saw Taylor’s dominance end when he was caught up in a crash in traffic and had to retire from the race and the challenge for the Gary Bowden Memorial Cup. For Hurford, a charge to the front of the field saw him take the lead and hold on to win both the race and the event overall.

A consistent Peter Logue finished in second, ahead of Adin Robertson who rounded out the podium positions. Tony Moule placed fourth ahead of Atkinson, David White, Bentvelzen, Grey, Hobson, McLeod, McDonald, Jimmy Low, and Brittany Kuypers.

In addition to Taylor’s bad luck, Wayne Logue was another non-finisher in the feature race.

Apart from winning the Gary Bowden Memorial Cup, Hurford moved in the lead of the Velocita Eastern Challenge point standings.
