It was the strong New South Wales contingent who managed to prevail in last weekend’s Northern Territory Wingless Sprint Championship, supported by Winnellie Hotel Motel, at Darwin’s Northline Speedway, with Troy Carey, Geoff Piekar and Troy Baker locking out the top three.

While it was WA-based competitor Sam Borlini who qualified in pole position for the NT Championship-deciding feature race aboard the Mike Borchardt-owned NT # 14 car, seizing the lead from the drop of the green flag, it was Tullamore’s Carey who immediately responded, driving around the outside of his rival in turns three and four to steal the lead on the completion of the opening lap.

From there, Carey never looked back, going on to lead each of the remaining 30 laps to claim his maiden state title crown. Greeting the chequered flag in a strong second place was Piekar, with Baker completing the podium in third. The interstate dominance continued with South Australian and former NT Champion Daniel Evans, who finished just off the podium in fourth, while WA-based driver Tom Britton rounded out the top-five finishers.

Nathan Dicker (NSW) was not quite able to crack into the top five, placing sixth, while Sean Tiedeman was the best of the locals, coming home seventh ahead of Sean Donnelly, Leigh Mugavin and final finisher Brett Sommerville.

It was a disappointing night for Borlini, whose NT Championship hopes were cut short when he was forced to retire on lap three with a mechanical issue while running second. Joining him on the infield were Victorians Robert Stevenson and Tony Moule, along with locals in ex-Junior Sedans racer Kale Quinlan and the fast-paced Kyle Wiseman.

Earlier in the night, the heat-race wins were awarded to Borlini, Evans and Wiseman.

On the opening night of competition, Borlini also began the night in strong form, scoring a heat-race win, before driving to a pleasing victory in the feature race, ahead of Carey and Baker. Dicker showed solid pace to finish fourth, with Wiseman, Quinlan, Piekar, Tiedeman, Britton and Jarrod Garraway rounding out the top 10. Completing the finishers were Evans, Mugavin, Stevenson and Sommerville.

Donnelly was the only casualty, prematurely retiring from the feature race just six laps in.

The remaining two heat-race victories went the way of Carey and Quinlan.

Drivers will return to Northline Speedway this Saturday night where they will contest the Freo Cranes Twin Feature Night, with the running of the Des J Nash Outlaw Challenge and the High Britton Memorial.
