000 - Portland Podium

After a triumphant win in the sixth and final round of the 2015-16 season Alfie’s Excavation & Plant Hire Super Series at Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway last Saturday night, local Daniel Storer has been named Super Series Champion.

The 30-lap feature race cemented the starting positions for the top four drivers, with Storer crossing the line first ahead of Glenn Watts, Luke Storer and current and two-time Victorian Champion James Wren. It was an extremely solid victory with Storer leading the race from start to finish, picking up his third round win of the six round Series, along with the Super Series victory.

The top-10 finishers were completed by veteran Peter Logue, Jason Langdon, Luke Weel, Jack Oliver, Ryan Watts and Haydn Reeves.

This has been a long awaited result for Storer who finished in the runner-up position in the past two Super Series point standings.

“I just couldn’t be happier with the result on the night and what made it even better was being able to secure the Super Series in the process,” Storer expressed after seizing the chequered flag.

“It’s been three seasons in the making and it feels great to finally come out on top.”

Alongside the new Super Series Champion, Storer’s younger brother, Luke, recorded his first podium in his debut season in Wingless Sprints making this a special night overall for the Storer family.

The night was marred by big crashes from former Super Series Champion Andy Hibbert and Layton Orchard. Hibbert was able to make it out later in the night, while Orchard was done for the night. The third round of heat races were forced to be cancelled, due to Warren Sell riding the wall during a crash and damaging the fence. There was an extended delay while the fixed was being repaired by the track staff.

The B main saw Travis Millar, Jack Oliver, Darcy McGlade, Reeves, Weel and Ryan Watts lock in starting spots for the feature race. Earlier in the night, the heat-race wins were shared between Glenn Watts, Mick Uebergang, Daniel Storer, Langdon, Mark Balcombe and Rhys Baxter.
