Glenn Watts returned to victory lane on Saturday night, when he put in a dominant performance to take top honours in the Victorian Wingless Sprints club show at Hamilton’s Western Speedway.

Securing pole position for the 20-lap feature race by virtue of a first, second and third-place finish in his earlier heat races, Watts couldn’t be beaten, leading from start to finish to claim his second feature-race win of the 2016-17 season, after winning the Super Series opener at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway in November.

Mick Parry continued his progress, managing to improve on his recent third-place finish at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway to finish second, while the consistent Travis Millar also impressed, powering through the field from position 11 to take the final podium place after struggling in the earlier heat races.

Nic Green was able to improve on his sixth-place starting position to finish just off the podium in fourth, ahead of South Australian visitor Robert Heard, who slipped back to fifth after starting the feature race on the second row. Bhoe Patterson, Leigh Mugavin, Peter Merrett, Warren Sell, Ashley Cook and Mitchell Broome completed the finishers.

The only feature-race causality was Jaimie-Lee Smith, who had retired on lap nine.

Watts asserted his dominance early, winning his opening heat race, while remaining consistent with a second and third-place finish in his remaining heat races. Trent Gravestock was also in strong form from the get-go, winning his opening heat race and backing it up with a third-place finish. Gravestock was unable to start his final heat race, due to mechanical issues, which continued to plague him later in the night and prevented him from starting the feature race. The remaining heat-race wins went the way of Parry, Patterson, Broome and Heard.

For their next appearance, the Victorian Wingless Sprints will head to Simpson Speedway for the Front Row Challenge on the Saturday night of February 18, while Rosedale Speedway will host a club show on the same night.
