Whyalla Wingless Win To Walkom
Following the opening round at the Tolmer Speedway being postponed the Wingless Sprints SA State Series officially began last Saturday night at the Whyalla Speedway with Thomas Walkom causing a major upset as he claimed his first major feature win. After starting on the front row Walkom led all 25 laps holding off a late charging Tate Cowie and Thomas Norvill in what was an impressive driving performance.
Fourth place went to Murray Bridge resident Brett Ireland, who was driving the Pitcher Racing #57, while Michael Spoljaric, who was the top point scorer following the heats, completed the top five. Rookie Hayden Mason recorded his best result of his short career in sixth, while Ross Miller, Leanne Turner, Alan Saint, and Ryan Watts completed the finishers.
Earlier the 14 drivers conducted four heats with Thomas Norvill winning heat 1 ahead of Ross Miller and Thomas Walkom, while the second heat was secured by Michael “Spike” Spoljaric, who defeated Alan Saint and Brett Ireland. The second round of heats started with Kadina’s Tate Cowie dominating heat 3 winning by over four seconds ahead of Walkom while the final heat saw Lockie Evans just edge out Spoljaric.
Therefore, Spoljaric topped the score chart going into the Top 6 Dash, but he drew an inverted four, placing Walkom on the pole and he used the invert to full effect, securing the pole for the finale. In the dash the big mover was Brett Ireland, who went from sixth to third while Spoljaric would drop to sixth.
