Martin Claims Early Season MMS Victory

The first South Australian Wingless Sprint A-main was completed on the weekend at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway with dual South Australian Champion Tyson Martin leading flag to flag in the 25-lap finale. After pressing for the lead late Jack McCarthy finished in the runner-up position just .634 of a second back while Anthony Tapley was a further 6 seconds behind in the final podium position.
With the race going caution free only seven drivers managed to complete the entire journey with Tate Cowie, who was impressive all evening in his ex-Matt Egel XXX Chassis, Bronson Mauro, Matthew Tyler and Andy Thomas following the top three.
“After not racing last weekend at Mildura I really thought I would struggle a bit tonight knowing that guys like Jack (McCarthy) and (Rylan) Furler were race ready, but we had a good car, and I felt good all night, and everything went well” added Tyson following the race.
Casey Atkinson and veteran Norm Moore both recorded a surprising top 10 result with Bordertown’s James Rodda completing the top 10 in the 19-car field. Darryl Knuckey, Kirby Hillyer, Mason Merritt, Sharni Pitcher, William Caruso and Hamilton’s Aaron Kennett were the only other classified finishers.
Earlier in the night the 31-car field were split into four groups therefore 8 heats were conducted prior to the B and A-mains. Heat winners were Tyson Martin (2), Rylan Furler, Matthew Tyler, Hayden Vickers, Sam Martin, Aaron Kennett and Bronson Mauro.
Throughout the heats a number of the fancied drivers encountered issues including dual Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, who was returning after an 18-month break. Chadwick has teamed up with Jake Ashworth to run a limited schedule this year with the intention of taking in a majority of the larger events. Unfortunately, his return didn’t go to plan as he involved in a multiple car incident in heat five and as a result the black #2 rolled over in turn four. The incident also saw Rylan Furler parked up as his right side nerf bar was dislodged.
Mount Gambier’s Kirby Hillyer and Sam Martin also dropped a heat after contact and as a result both drivers found themselves in the B-Main. Sam Martin would transfer into the A-Main after finishing second to William Caruso, along with Hayden Vickers and James Rodda. Hillyer would initially miss out after finishing fifth, but he would later be given an A-main start after Hayden Vickers withdrew from the A-main line-up.
This Saturday night a large contingent of the local racers will head across the border to contest the second Wingless Sprint event of the season at the Timmis Speedway in Mildura including the likes of Murray Bridge winner Tyson Martin, Rylan Furler, Joel Chadwick, Sam Martin, Tate Cowie, Hayden Vickers, Keke Falland and Dan Evans. The field will also include local Mildura based racers Jason and Jordon Bolitho, Anthony and Melissa McMillan and rookie Diesel Fallon, who has just stepped up from the Junior Sedan ranks.
