In a show of great respect to a long-time speedway enthusiast, the WA Wingless Sprints have recently concluded that all future WA Wingless Sprint Titles will be named after the late Des Nash, in honour of his legacy.

Having passed away in early February last year after battling a long-term illness, just days before the WA Title, the 2015-16 running of the event was held in Nash’s honour at Quit Collie Speedway and the WA Wingless Sprints have now decided to continue paying tribute to the speedway stalwart, who was a key player in pushing Wingless Sprints forward on both a state and national level.

“Des was such a huge supporter of Wingless Sprints throughout the years and put a lot of work into bettering the class and helping it to grow,” commented WA Wingless Sprints President Kim Beard.

“We wanted to do something to honour the legacy that Des has left behind, so we came up with this initiative to name the WA Title after him to pay tribute to him and his memory.”

One of the founding members of the AWSR and Vice President at the time of his passing, Nash had a rich history in speedway, having raced Speedcars and Sprintcars throughout the 1970s, 80s and early 90s before becoming involved with the administration and car owner side of things. His passion for speedway is something that he passed on to his sons Lee and Allan, who have both raced Sprintcars competitively, with Lee still racing, along with Allan’s teenage son AJ.

The 2016-17 season Des Nash WA Title will be held at the Perth Motorplex on the Friday and Saturday night of January 13 and 14.
