Last Saturday night saw Luke Weel clinch the victory in the second round of the Super Series, supported by Heytesbury Stockfeeds, in front of his home crowd at Simpson Speedway.

Starting the feature race on the outside of the front row alongside pole-sitter Rhys Baxter, the now Warrnambool-based racer, who is originally from Simpson, jumped to an early lead and was never headed for the duration of the 25-lap distance, going on to take the win over Dayn Bentvelzen in second and Baxter in third.

After his third-place finish in the opening round of the Super Series at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway, Weel now leads the point standings with a 53-point buffer over defending series champion Daniel Storer.

“To get the win in Simpson in front of my home crown was amazing,” expressed Weel, who still has strong ties to his hometown.

“The support I’ve received, in particular from my major sponsor Heytesbury Stockfeeds, who also sponsor the Super Series and also Simpson Speedway, has been fantastic. It’s been a really strong start to the season, so hopefully that can continue for the rest of the season.”

Finishing just off the podium in fourth was Daniel Storer, ahead of B-main two winner and local Mathew Balcombe, Luke Storer, Robert Heard, Glenn Watts, Wayne Logue and Mathew Symons in 10th.

Remaining finishers were B main transfers Mick Rigby, Alex Thomson and Mitchell Broome, along with veteran Peter Logue, Marc Evans and Geoff Cook, while Chris Halesworth and young rookie Carly Walsh were unable to finish the feature race. The latter crashed out and brought out the feature race’s lone red-light stoppage.

Earlier in the night, the heat-race wins went the way of Weel, Baxter (x 2), Peter Logue, Luke Storer, Trent Gravestock, Jaidyn Job and Symons.

B main one saw Thomson, Symons and Cook secure transfer places, with Balcombe, Rigby and Broome taking the transfer spots in B main two.

For the next appearance, the Victorian Wingless Sprints will head to Bairnsdale Speedway for a club show on Boxing Day (December 26).
