Speedway City Double For Ashworth

By Phil Michell

After a season that had been dominated by State Champion Joel Chadwick the last two Wingless Sprint events have seen a new contender emerge as Jake Ashworth claimed his second Speedway City main event in a row. Last Saturday night (April 9) Ashworth was the lucky recipient of the marble draw as top qualifier Chadwick drew an inverted four placing putting Ashworth on the pole and he went on to capitalise on the front row start.

Second across the line in the 25 lap finale was Murray Bridge racer Robert Heard in his #57 Triple X while Matthew Kennedy made a welcomed return to the podium with a solid third placed run. In what was an impressive drive rookie Joel Heinrich, who has only been driving in the Wingless Sprint class for a little over a month, finished fourth ahead of Michael Spoljaric, Dan Evans, Brett Ireland, Travis Beasley, Aaron Doe and Bronson Mauro.

Despite leading the entire distance Ashworth was continually placed under pressure by Spencer Taylor with Taylor unfortunately coming unstuck on the final lap as he made a desperate attempt for the lead in turn three. The result was Taylor riding out a massive crash after his #46 bicycled hard before flipping several times. Ashworth was actually extremely lucky to avoid becoming part of the accident as Taylor tagged the rear nerf bar on the black and yellow #2.

Rookie Haydyn Farrow also ended his feature event with a gentle roll over in turn four. Chadwick ended his race on the infield as an issue with his ignition switch put him out of the race early.

Earlier the heats were all tightly contested events with full fields of 11 cars in each of the four preliminary heats. The winners were Heinrich, Chadwick, Kennedy and Ashworth.

The South Australian Wingless Sprint season continues this Saturday night at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway with a field of 23 cars entered. This will be the biggest field at Murray Bridge this season, including several drivers from Mount Gambier and Mildura.
