The Victorian Wingless Sprints contested the opening round of the Super Series presented by Velocita Safety at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway on Saturday night and it was Glenn Watts who came away with top honours.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Watts, who started out of position two for the 25-lap feature race. Hard-charging third-place starter Travis Millar took the lead early on over Watts and pole-sitter Luke Weel and was displaying strong pace, until a mistake from Millar allowed Watts to get the jump on him into first place, a position he would retain for the remainder of the race.

It was a disappointing result for Millar, who crossed the line in second place but was relegated to fourth after hitting a cone on a late restart. This moved defending Super Series Champion Daniel Storer up to second place and current NSW # 3 Weel into third to take the final podium place.

Dayn Bentvelzen put in a great drive to finish just off the podium in fourth aboard the Adrian Densley-owned Vic # 32 machine, with Mathew Kennedy, who was the best of the South Australian contingent, in fifth.

Rounding out the finishers were Mitchell Broome, current Australia # 3 Robert Heard, Carly Walsh, who managed to finish ninth after transferring from the B main, Rhys Baxter, Wayne Logue, Michael Uebergang, Geoff Cook and Alex Thomson.

A number of drivers were forced to end their nights prematurely after suffering from a range of mechanical problems including Luke Storer, Todd Hobson, Trent Gravestock, Marcus Green, Spencer Taylor and Michael Ross.

Earlier in the night, the heat-race wins were shared between Daniel Storer, Weel, Gravestock, Baxter, Thomson and Millar.

Wayne Logue was victorious in the B main to secure his transfer spot to the feature race along with Ross, Walsh and Hobson, with Walsh going on to record the best finish of the four in her first full season in Wingless Sprints.
