Warrnambool’s Luke Weel proved unbeatable over the weekend, taking out both race meetings in a huge doubleheader at Laang Speedway and Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway.

Weel was in great form when he hit the track at Laang Speedway on Saturday night in the Crossfire Shootout, going flag-to-flag to take the feature-race win ahead of Leigh Mugavin and Rhys Baxter and scoring himself a Crossfire Kanga 90cc Quad Bike in the process. Backing up that form on Sunday night at Premier Speedway, Weel managed to take the lead after starting from pole position and was never headed, taking out the third round of the Super Series, supported by The Tyre Factory, Warrnambool, thus consolidating his Super Series lead.

Completing the Crossfire Shootout top five on Saturday night was Travis Millar and Todd Hobson, with Chris Halesworth, Alex Thomson, Geoff Cook, Raymond Klemm and Michael McDonald rounding out the top-10 finishers. The remaining finishers were Simon Van Ginneken, Shaun Lyness, Bhoe Paterson, Mick Uebergang and Mick Rigby, while Ben Doukas, Marc Evans and Steven Hately all suffered premature ends due to retirements.

Weel dominated early, winning both of his heat races, with the remaining heat-race wins shared between Mugavin, Uebergang, Ebony Hobson and Todd Hobson.

Evans showed his pace, taking out the B main ahead of Van Ginneken and Paterson, with Lyness and McDonald taking the final transfer spots into the feature race.

With a huge field of 47 cars nominated, Sunday night’s action at Premier Speedway saw Baxter start the 25-lap feature race from position two alongside pole sitter Weel, but it was Weel who got the jump of the line to immediately take the lead from Baxter in the opening lap, going on to take his second victory in as many nights. Sam Wren seized the runner-up spot behind Weel, with Baxter once again rounding out the podium in third.

Defending Super Series Champion Daniel Storer, currently in second place in the Super Series point standings, finished in fourth, with Millar, Dayn Bentvelzen, Marcus Green, veteran Peter Logue, Matthew Balcombe and Jason Langdon completing the top 10 ahead of the remaining finishers Mitchell Broome, Glenn Watts, Shaun McClure, Thomson, Carly Walsh, Mick Parry, Luke Storer and Kris Johnson (NSW).

Heat-race wins went the way of Langdon, Wren, Weel, Thomson, Daniel Storer, Luke Storer, Bentvelzen and Baxter, while Balcombe, Johnson, Parry and McClure secured transfer spots into the feature race in B main 1. Robert Heard (SA) and Rhys Crawford were unlucky to experience unfortunate DNFs during the feature race after claiming transfer spots in B main 2, with the remaining transfer spots going the way of Watts and Luke Storer.

After his hometown victory in the second round of the Super Series at Simpson Speedway in December, Weel has now taken out all but one of the three Super Series rounds so far, with Watts having scored the win in the opening round at Borderline Speedway back in November, 2016.

For their next appearance, the Victorian Wingless Sprints will head to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway this Saturday night for the fourth Super Series round, supported by Salt Electrical.
