Wingless Sprints Head To The Mallee

By Phil Michell

This Saturday night the South Australian Wingless Sprint season will continue at the Timmis Speedway at Mildura with a non-points event at the Victorian venue. This weekend’s race comes hot on the heels of a busy schedule with events at Speedway City and Mount Gambier in recent weeks.

This Saturday night (27th February) the field will comprise of 10 drivers with a mixture of local racers and a couple of drivers who will make the long trek across the border. The local contingent will be led by Travis Beasley, Jason Bolitho and Anthony McMillan who will be keen to defend their home clay from the likes of Spencer Taylor, Jason Gantz and Renee Pestka, who will be back after several events out of the seat.

Complete Nomination List: S4 Travis Beasley, S28 Renee Pestka, S37 Anthony McMillan, S43 Jason Gantz, S46 Spencer Taylor, S52 Jason Bolitho, S63 Andrew Price (ROF), S69 Mitch Gladman, S73 Melissa McMillan, S86 Angelo Halacas.

As previously mentioned the Wingless Sprint brigade have been racing right across the state in recent weeks with the latest driver to join the winners list being Michael Spoljaric (pictured), who claimed his maiden feature event win at Speedway City last Saturday night.

After starting from the front row, alongside Lucy Evans, Spoljaric led the entire race to win from William Caruso, who also recorded a career best finish. Third place went the way of Brett Ireland, who was performing double duty on the night as he was also competing in the Speedcar event.

After dropping back early Lucy Evans held on to secure fourth while Spencer Taylor, Darryl Sloan, Jaime Lee-Andrews and Brandon Forrester completed the finishers.

Newly crowned South Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, who was nominated in the Daniel Obst owned #22, failed to turn a lap all night as he battled fuel pressure problems.

Earlier the heat winners were Spoljaric and Evans.

The week prior the drivers ventured to the Borderline Speedway at Mount Gambier with a field of 12 competitors fronting for action but unfortunately they only got through three heat races before the feature was cancelled due to time constraints.

The heat winners on the night were Murray Bridge resident Robert Heard, who was back following a massive wreck at the South Australian Championship, Spencer Taylor and local Mount Gambier racer Trent Gravestock.

Despite the fact that the feature race was cancelled Wingless Sprints SA would like to thank the Borderline Speedway for programming the class at their event and to thank the following drivers for competing: S6 Michael Ross, S10 William Caruso, V13 Jason Rigby, V14 Michael Uebergang, NT 18 Joshua Norman, S19 Michael Spoljaric, S31 Casey Van der Stelt, V31 Elira Degrandi, S35 Mitchell Broome, S46 Spencer Taylor, S57 Robert Heard, S85 Trent Gravestock.
