Steel City Trek For SA Series Opener
By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
Following the postponement of the opening round at the Tolmer Speedway due to weather conditions, the SA State Series for Wingless Sprints will begin this Saturday night (November 1) with what is officially Round 2 at the Whyalla Speedway. A total of 15 nominations has been received for the event in the “Steel City” therefore, the night will comprise of four heat races, a top 6 dash and a 30 lap A-Main.
Among the drivers expected to feature prominently towards the front will include Kadina’s Tate Cowie, who was fifth at the most recent meeting two weeks ago, Michael Spoljaric, Brett Ireland, Thomas Norvill, Lockie Evans, Jesse Alexander, Ross Miller and “The Prez” Darryl Sloan, who has recoded two top 10 results already this season.
This weekend will be the third night of action for the South Australian Wingless Sprint competitors this season with night 2 taking place a fortnight ago at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway. On what was a great night of racing, that saw 34 drivers sign into the pit area, the feature event saw a surprise winner as young Riverland racer Riley Hammerstein upstaged the field on what was a dry, slick racetrack.
After starting from position five, Hammerstein worked his way to the front with 12 laps remaining after utilising the low groove to perfection and then he went on to negate the pressure from the reigning Australian Champion Tyson Martin. For the second main event in a row Rylan Furler led early but once again was unable to cross the line first, this time falling back to third just ahead of an impressive Kaitlin Vickers and Tate Cowie.
Former National Champion Joel Chadwick had an up and down finale as he finished sixth but with 10 laps to go, he was as low as 11th, while Mildura’s Jordon Bolitho, Thomas Walkom, Casey Atkinson and Darryl Sloan completed the top 10.
Regular Wingless Sprint racers Jack McCarthy and Sam Martin have a busy night as they completed double duties driving in both the 360/LS Sprintcar and Wingless Sprint divisions. McCarthy managed a fourth placed result in the 360/LS Sprintcar A-main before finishing eleventh in the Wingless Main while Martin was ninth in the Sprintcar but failed to finish in the Wingless.
