Wingless Double Down
By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
The SA Wingless Sprint State Series steps up a gear this weekend with two rounds to be staged in the State’s South-East. The first stop will be on Friday night at the Tolmer Speedway in Bordertown before the teams take the highway for the short trip to the Borderline Speedway in Mount Gambier on Saturday.
The Tolmer Speedway round of the series is a make up round after the opening event of series was postponed back in October while the Borderline Speedway will be hosting Round 6. The Double Header this weekend follows Round 5 of the Series that was held at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie in January, with regular Sprintcar competitor Keke Falland emerging victorious.
In addition to Falland’s victory in the previous round Thomas Walkom (Whyalla) and Brett Ireland (Murray Bridge) have also won a completed round of the series while the Renmark event was unfortunately cancelled.
Over the past couple of seasons since the track reopened the Wingless Sprints have conducted a number of “demonstration events” at the Tolmer Speedway but this will be the first time that the class has officially competed on the high banks for State points.
Both nights of competition have attracted a nomination list of over 35 plus cars with 44 drivers expected at the Tolmer Speedway with 37 at Mount Gambier. Included in the star-studded nomination lists are the likes of Dual Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, Rylan Furler, Brett Ireland, Mitch Broome, Kirby Hillyer, Victorian Luke Weel, Tom Norvill, Robert Heard, Alex Ross, Michael Spoljaric and James Wren, therefore picking a winner for feature events is almost impossible.
With so many cars expected the format for the events will see two rounds of heats, a Top 6 Dash, a C & B Main, before the Top 20 drivers will battle it out in a 25-lap A-main.
