A host of NSW Wingless Sprint drivers will be expected to fare well in the upcoming 2016-17 season, off the back of some impressive results throughout 2015-16.
Without a doubt, Mark Blyton was a shining light, coming away with the NSW Club Championship, as well as the NSW Track Championship. The veteran racer saw the podium multiple times and also scored a feature-race win. Blyton displayed his resilience at the Australian Title at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway, when he took a trip to the hospital following an off-track incident and managed to return to the track, fighting through his injuries to finish 12th.
Getting an early start to his 2016-17 season, Sydney’s Nathan Dicker hit the ground running at Darwin’s Northline Speedway during the NT Triple Challenge, where he visited the podium on all three nights. Dicker claimed the final podium place in the Des J Nash Outlaw Challenge on opening night and backed it up the following weekend with two second-place finishes in the KeenQuip Racegear Feature and the NT Open Championship. He is sure to be a tough competitor throughout the season.
Dubbo’s Troy Carey, who came away with a third-place finish in the 2015-16 season Queensland Title, also achieved some impressive results during the NT Triple Challenge. Carey finished just off the podium in fourth in the Des J Nash Outlaw Challenge, and continued his speed the following two nights, with a pair of third-place finishes behind Dicker.
Chris McInerney will be hoping to go one better this season, after finishing second in the NSW Club Championship and NSW Track Championship behind Blyton. Finishing third behind McInerney in both Championships, Jason Davis will be looking for redemption after a disappointing start to his 2016-17 season campaign, with two DNFs and a sixth-place finish in the NT Triple Challenge.
Off the back of his Queensland Title victory last season, Trent Martin will also be hoping to build on his consistency and achieve some top-three results.
The 2016-17 season calendar for the NSW Wingless Sprints includes the 100-Lapper Grand Prix from January 13-14, the NSW Title on March 4 and the 50-Lapper Rumble on March 18, all at Lismore Speedway.
