The 2016-17 season Australian Wingless Sprints Title will take place for the first time in the state of Tasmania at Carrick Speedway on February 23, 24 and 25.

A short 20-minute drive from Launceston, Carrick Speedway will hold Tasmania’s first Australian Wingless Sprint Title since the state’s inception of the class four seasons ago.

Despite the ‘Apple Isle’ being the last state to enter into the class, they have consistent car numbers at each event, with an average of 20 competitors taking part.

The track itself is in a prime position for interstate competitors, close to Launceston, but also an hour drive from Devonport, where the Spirit of Tasmania docks, or just over two hours to the state’s capital Hobart. This means a holiday before or after the event is easily accessible to all.

Carrick Speedway race director, Steve Jessup, is enthusiastic about the mainland getting the chance to compete on a national stage in his neck of the woods.

“It is very exciting to be hosting the Australian Title in Tasmania for the first time and it’s proof of the class’s growth in the state,” Jessup expressed, who advised mainlanders to book the boat over to Tasmania as early as possible in order to get the best price and assure your spot on the boat.

“Our club is looking forward to a very strong line up at the event, but also hope the mainlanders can make the most of their time and visit some of the best Tasmania has to offer.”

Current Australian Wingless Sprints Racing president Michael Parry is equally excited about the Australian Title making its way to Tasmania.

“The state of Tasmania has enjoyed a quick rise since starting up and full credit must go to their committed members for working hard on the class,” said Parry.

“Hosting the Australian Title is a great reward for Tasmania. I’m confident that next season’s event is going to be an exciting one that will be well-supported by the mainland competitors.”
The Tasmania Wingless Sprint Title was recently held at Carrick Speedway, and it saw the win go to Brad Whitchurch for the second season in a row. Queenslander Scott Thomsen, who was one of five mainlanders to contest the event, ran second on the podium.
