Evans First Across The Line At Waikerie
By Phil Michell
After spending the week leading up to the event putting together another car following a chassis wrecking crash at Mildura, Dan Evans proved that the hard work was worth it as he drove to victory at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie last Saturday night (May 14). Going into the final Michael Spoljaric was a hot favourite but a mid-race mistake from the pole sitter saw him spin just as Evans powered around the outside allowing the local Riverland racer to claim the Chris Evans Transport supported A-Main.
With Spoljaric re-joining the field in seventh, second place would therefore go to Murray Bridge resident Brett Ireland with Jason Gantz completing the top three. Fourth across the line was South Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, who appeared to be struggling aboard the Dan Obst owned #22, as he encountered several uncharacteristic spins throughout the night.
Darryl Sloan, who had earlier spun out of the lead in the second heat, bounced back to record a solid top five result with Mildura’s Anthony McMillian, Spoljaric, Lucy Evans and Victorian rookie Ben Pollock rounding out the finishers.
Earlier in the night Spoljaric dominated the heat races with two victories while Brett Ireland was the runner-up in both heats while McMillian and Dan Evans both recorded a third placed result in the preliminaries.
The next event on the Wingless Sprints SA season calendar will be the 2015/16 end of season Presentation Night on Saturday the 28th May at The Archer Hotel in North Adelaide with a 7pm start.
Following the Presentation Night a non-points race meeting has been scheduled for the Sunday afternoon Day Show at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie on June 12, 2016.
