Furler Goes Further Ahead
By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
Rylan Furler consolidated his points lead in the 2023/24 TiBills Wingless Sprint Race Series with victory in Round 4 at the Sunline Speedway at Waikerie last weekend. Despite the car not running on all cylinders during the heats Furler still managed to make the top 6 dash and he received a slice of good luck as Jack McCarthy inverted the top six with Furler going on to secure pole. From there he was able to stay out the mayhem behind him as he went on to win by a big margin ahead of last year’s series Champion Keke Falland and Matthew Kennedy.
Unfortunately, the race proved to be a tough event for a majority of the field with less than half of the initial starters finishing the gruelling feature event. Fourth across the line was local Barossa Valley resident Jesse Alexander with Tickford Racing driver Brad Vaughan rounding out the top five. The only other drivers to complete the journey were Matthew Tyler, Thomas Walkom and rookie Steven Winwood.
Some of the notable drivers who failed to finish included last round winner Jack McCarthy, who rolled after being caught up in a multi-car incident on first lap, that also claimed “The Prez” Darryl Sloan, while a second pile-up later in the race saw the likes of William Caruso, Jenna Kervers and Caleb Evans take no further part.
Former South Australian Champion Tyson Martin had a torrid finale after being disqualified as the primary cause of two stoppages.
With 17 cars present two rounds of two heats were conducted with Jack McCarthy, Tyson Martin, Matthew Kennedy and Keke Falland each taking a heat win.
