The second round of the Intercity Signs Ladies of the Dirt Series last Saturday night at Laang Speedway resulted in Samantha Millar taking out the win.
After qualifying in second for the 20-lap feature race, Millar, who had a mixed run in the opening round before fighting back to end the feature race in fifth place, crossed the line in first place, ahead of Te-arni Perkins and Georgia McLeod in second and third respectively. Previous round winner Jaimie-Lee Smith came home in fourth place ahead of Renae Eastham, Demelza Nettlefold, rookie Carly Walsh, Bree Hall and Bianca Klemm.
The battle is heating up between Millar and Smith, who both recorded heat-race wins earlier in the night. While Smith still leads the Ladies of the Dirt Series point standings, Millar is now trailing closely behind by virtue of her round-two victory.
It was a disappointing finish for pole-sitter Elira DeGrandi, who was forced out after a spectacular crash while battling with Perkins for second. Leading into the feature race, DeGrandi had scored a pair of second-place finishes in the heat races.
Misfortune during the feature race also followed Brittany Kuypers and Rhiannon Burleigh who were both DNFs.
Sharing the bill on the night at Laang Speedway was the annual Anzac Gold Cup; however, the feature race was unfortunately cancelled five laps in and therefore declared a non-event, which was due to the ambulance being required to attend to an incident in another class. Earlier in the night, heat-race winners were Ross Jarred, Brett Kuypers, David Cook, Travis Millar, Peter Merrett and Raymond Klemm.
The following night at Hamilton’s Western Speedway, Glenn Watts recorded the feature-race win. He managed to defeat Chris Halesworth and Michael Ross in second and third respectively.
The next event on the Wingless Sprints Victoria 2015-16 season calendar will be fought out at Darlington’s Mid-Western Speedway on the Saturday night of May 7 for the $1,000 To Win event that is to be run in conjunction with the third Ladies of the Dirt Series round.
