State Champs Out To Impress at MMS Opener

A stout field of 29 Wingless Sprints will be the major feature this Saturday night (September 24) at the opening meeting of the South Australian season at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway. The event will count as the opening round of the newly established Ausloans Finance Track Championship so the competitors will be out to get their Championship chase off to the best possible start.

Following a couple of official practice sessions over the past few weeks, the drivers will be extremely keen to get back behind the wheel for some serious racing this weekend, and with such a talented line-up assembled, that includes two current State Champions, some close open wheeled racing can be assured.

A number of proven race winners such as Jack McCarthy, SA Champ Tyson Martin, Ryan Alexander, Rylan Furler, Hayden Vickers and Anthony Tapley will be looking to open their A-Main winner’s account early. But late last season several other drivers were starting to look increasingly impressive as they continued to log laps, including youngsters Nate Trewin, Jenna Kervers and James Rodda, so it won’t be long before they start mixing it up towards the front regularly.

With the South Australian season starting a little earlier than across the border several Victorians have taken the opportunity to get their campaigns underway. Dual Victorian Champion Luke Storer will make the trip from Portland and he is always fast at Murray Bridge and he will be joined by Cobden’s Blake Walsh, Peter Logue, Hamilton’s Aaron Kennett and Jake Dooley. Darwin’s John Murdie will also join the field as he continues his season as he heads south following the conclusion of the racing calendar at the Northline Speedway.

As has become the norm in recent years the local Wingless Sprint competitor numbers have once again increased with close to 10 new drivers registered. This Saturday night will see 5 rookies on track with Tyson Newton, driving the Norm Moore #6 Cool, Sam Martin, Troy Frisby, former AMCA Nationals racer Thomas Walkom and former Rally competitor Michael Busby all making their debut.

Although he is not a rookie Dale Gesell will make a welcomed return to competition behind the wheel of the #19 Cool chassis owned by Michael Spoljaric after several seasons on the sidelines.

With 29 cars expected the night will feature six heat races, a B-main prior to the 25 lap A-Main.
