Winning Start For A New Combination
By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
The South Australian Wingless Sprint season got underway last Saturday night on a chilly September night at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway. Despite an early start to the season the first event attracted a healthy car count of 34 competitors. After six heat races and a B-Main the top 20 drivers battled it out for the opening 25 lap finale and when the chequered flag fell it was a familiar name in victory lane.
After a heat win and a second placed finish earlier in the night former Australian Champion Joel Chadwick made a successful debut driving for Andrew and Lyn May as he drove their immaculately presented #47 to a convincing win. After starting on the front row and leading the opening 14 laps Rylan Furler had to settle for the runner-up position while Mildura’s Jordon Bolitho was impressive all evening and capped off a great night as he filled the final podium position.
Michael “Spike” Spoljaric was next across the line while Robert Heard completed the top five. Darryl Sloan had one of his best meetings for some time as he finished sixth ahead of Bordertown’s James Rodda, Ross Miller, Hayden Mason, and Aaron Kennett. Darryl Knuckey and Sam Martin were only other finishers. Up until the final lap Martin was destined for a result just outside the top five until contact with Tate Cowie robbed them both of a better result.
The biggest casualty of the main event was Jess Alexander, who’s night came to a premature end after inverting his bright pink and black #84 in turn four.
Earlier in the night the heat winners were Jordon Bolitho (2), Rylan Furler, Robert Heard, Lochie Evans and Joel Chadwick.
Rookie Hayden Mason made an immediate statement as he was the only debutante to qualify for the A-Main after winning the B-main while Leanne Turner, Victorian Aaron Kennett and Thomas Walkom also transferred via the last chance qualifier.
The next event on the South Australian Wingless Sprint calendar will be a double header at Bordertown’s Tolmer Speedway on Friday October 10 and Saturday October 11, 2025. Last season an invitational field of Wingless Sprints supported the Grand Re-Opening of the venue, and this will be the first time that an open event has been scheduled at the newly redesigned high-banked track.
The Friday night meeting will the see the Wingless Sprints programmed along with the Formula 500’s at what will be the venue’s Opening Night of the 2025/26 season while the action will step up the following night as Round 1 of the SA State Series will take place.
