By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
This Saturday night (March 14) the 2020 Queensland Wingless Sprint Champion will be crowned at the Ausdeck Patios Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane with 29 drivers from two states set to contest the event. Among the drivers nominated are two previous Champions along with several who have graced the podium in State Titles making this one of the strongest fields seen in Queensland this season.
The local contingent will he headed by Scott Thomsen, who is a three-time Queensland Champion following his win at Maryborough last season. Thomsen recently contested the 60-Lapper at the Murray Machining and Sheds Speedway at Murray Bridge, but he encountered a tough weekend and he will be looking to bounce back on Saturday night.
Cody O’Connell is another driver to keep an eye on as he has been the runner-up in the last two Queensland Championships, and he would nothing more than to go one spot this weekend. Casey O’Connell will also be a strong contender as he is coming off a top 10 in the 60 Lapper and he has been a feature winner this season at the Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway.
Queensland will also be represented by several other talented drivers including Tim Harris, who was the last start winner at Archerfield, Paul Robinson who is feature winner this season, Brody Thomsen, who qualified for the A-Main at the 60 Lapper at MMS, Timothy Harris, Dan Evans and Casey O’Connell.
New South Wales will have a strong representation with eight drivers heading north across the border. Among the interstate entries are the 2018 Champion David Eggins, who was also the runner-up in 2014. He is also a feature race winner at Archerfield this season so he will be among the favourites this Saturday night. Another leading contender will be Troy Carey, who has placed third previously in this event in 2016 and he is a previous Northern Territory State Champion.
Joining the above interstate drivers will be Jacob Jolley, who was on the podium at his last Archerfield start, Paul Freeman, Brock Gardiner, Ben Hull, Jamie Usher, Errol Campbell, Michael Reid and Michael Butcher.
