Scott Thomsen has come away with the fastest lap in practice for the Australian Wingless Sprints Title at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway in Queensland.

Regarded as Queensland’s best hope when it comes to this weekend’s Australian Title, the Maryborough-based racer managed to top the time sheets at the completion of the 21 practice sessions yesterday afternoon with a best lap of 14.69 seconds.

The next best behind the two-time Queensland Champion were the Victorian duo of veteran Peter Logue (14.702) and Travis Millar (14.708). Thomsen’s fastest lap was recorded in the 11th session, while Logue achieved his in the 12th session and Millar’s in the 19th session.

It’s interesting to note that only half the field that practice yesterday had transponders fitted to their cars.

In what was a relatively trouble-free opening to Australian Title festivities, NSW-favourite Mark Blyton was in the wars – off the track. An accident in the pits, due to slipping off the edge of his transporter while preparing to go out for his second practice session, resulted in the Dubbo-based veteran sustaining injuries to both his head and leg. Despite a trip to the local hospital, where he was released after a few hours, Blyton is determined to contest the remainder of the weekend.

The Australian Title blasts into action tonight with three rounds of heat races and a preliminary feature race.

Last night’s Calcutta was judged an outstanding success and nearly $6000 was raised. The highest driver at the Calcutta, current and two-time Victorian Champion James Wren, was sold for $575.
