Wingless Try Again At MMS
By Phil Michell Motorsport Media
This Saturday night the South Australian Wingless Sprint competitors will once again attempt to get their opening event of the season in the books at the Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway following their rain out in late September. The meeting was cancelled after just nine racing events, which included a highly entertaining and competitive opening round of Wingless Sprint heats.
Heat winners on the night included Rylan Furler, Mason Merritt, and Jack McCarthy, with the heat of the night being heat 2, that saw Mason Merritt make a last corner, outside pass to defeat Andy Thomas by .159 of a second at the finish line. This Saturday night all three of the previous events heat winners will be back along with a further 33 drivers therefore it will be a tough assignment just to make the 20 car A-Main field.
Since the disappoint of the opening night several of the local Wingless racers have been in action with several drivers making the trek to Mildura last weekend. Jack McCarthy was victorious in the 25-lap finale with Rylan Furler (Third) and Jesse Alexander (Fifth) also enjoying a successful evening.
As previously mentioned, 36 drivers are expected at Murray Bridge this weekend including the usual favourites McCarthy, Furler, Tyson Martin, Sam Martin, and Anthony Tapley but there are several additions to the field that are likely to be right up the front.
The major additions include the return of multi-time Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, who will pilot the Jake Ashworth #2, Brad Vaughan, who is fresh from making his Bathurst 1000 debut last Sunday and Mount Gambier’s Kirby Hillyer, who missed the opening night.
The field will also include a whole host of young talent who have emerged from the Dirt Kart ranks including Hayden and Kaitlin Vickers, Tom Norvill, James Rodda and Tate Cowie.
The format for the evening will include two rounds of heats, a 20 car, B-main (if all cars are still running) and the all-important A-main to decide who will be the opening feature event winner of the 2024/25 South Australian Wingless Sprint Season.
