Broome Dusts Off The Competition at MMS

Mount Gambier racers Mitch Broome and Kirby Hillyer made a statement last Saturday night at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway as they ran 1-2 in the latest Wingless Sprints SA Club Show, ending the early season dominance of Jack McCarthy and Joel Chadwick.

After starting on the second row Broome quickly raced to second on the opening lap before passing Joel Chadwick for the lead on lap 12. Broome would then briefly lose the lead to Hillyer before taking it back a lap later. From that point he led the remaining seven laps to take a well-deserved win by just over 0.3 of a second.

With this latest result both competitors will go into the opening event at their home track (Borderline) this weekend full of confidence and they will be hoping for a similar result on Saturday night in front of their hometown fans and sponsors.

Third place went to Hayden Vickers, who started on the front row, with early leader Joel Chadwick fading back to finish fourth ahead of Bronson Mauro, who enjoyed one of his best nights for several seasons. Current Super Sedan star Ryan Alexander made a real impact during his Wingless debut finishing sixth in his jet black #36 after qualifying ninth for the main event. Fellow rookie Tyson Martin, Jack McCarthy, Brett Ireland and Robert Heard rounded out the top 10 in the 20-car A-Main field.

Earlier four heat races were completed with Robert Heard making a winning return to Wingless competition as he piloted the Andrew May owned #47 to the win ahead of McCarthy and Broome. Heat two would see Vickers edge out Chadwick in one of the races of the night while heat 3 saw the result reversed as Chadwick defeated Vickers and Mauro. The final heat saw Hillyer defeat Broome, with Martin, Brad Evans and Melissa Crouch, who was making her first Wingless start, completing the top five.

Due to the cancellation of the meeting at the Borderline Speedway a fortnight ago the Wingless Sprints have been rescheduled for the meeting this Saturday night, with the biggest field of the South Australian season so far set to compete. This weekend will also see a field of nine cars head to the Riverland Speedway at Renmark for the Club Show that was originally scheduled.

The Riverland Speedway field is headlined by dual Australian Champion Joel Chadwick, Sprintcar racer Keke Falland, Darryl Sloan, Nicole Southby and the returning William Caruso. Mildura youngster Jordon Bolitho will make the short drive across the border while former Australian Street Stock Champion Rhys Heinrich will make his open wheeled debut at his home track.

Despite the meeting only being confirmed last week a field of 25 cars will compete at the Borderline Speedway with the border re-opening recently the line-up includes 15 Victorian drivers.

The Victorian entry consists of some Australia’s best drivers including former Australia #2 Luke Weel, who won the feature at Horsham last Saturday night, current SA Champ Daniel Storer, current Victorian Champ Luke Storer, Luke McCutcheon, Tim Van Ginneken, Christopher Halesworth and Blake Walsh. Both Halesworth and Walsh are coming off strong results at the Blue Ribbon Raceway having finished third and fourth, respectively.

The South Australian contingent will include the likes of Jack McCarthy, who already has feature wins at Murray Bridge and Whyalla, local heroes Mitch Broome, Kirby Hillyer and Rory Button, Hayden Vickers and Anthony Tapley.

Following the events this weekend the Wingless Sprints will headline the Boxing Day (December 26) event at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway with the feature being supported by Dirt X Industries.
