Following a large crash in the recent Australian Wingless Sprint Championship at Carrick Speedway in Tasmania, Travis Millar managed to pull it all together to take out Saturday night’s fifth Victorian Super Series round, supported by Bill Storer Motors, at Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway.

Piloting the Fitzpatrick Autosport Vic # 2 machine, having sustained significant damage to his own car during the Australian Championship, Millar lined up on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap feature race; however, it was pole-sitter and local Luke Storer who made the best of the start, retaining the top spot before retiring on lap 17 after spinning from contact with Watts while chasing a lapped car.

Inheriting the lead, Glenn Watts’s stint out front was short lived, with Millar getting the better of him on lap 20 with an outside move, as Watts defended the bottom, to move into first place, a position he was able to retain through to the chequered flag. Continuing his solid form after a fifth-place finish in the Australian Championship, Watts came home in the runner-up position, with Robert Heard finishing an impressive third, after starting from position eight.

Mirroring his Australian Championship result, Daniel Storer finished just off the podium in fourth, with Dayn Bentvelzen rounding out the top five. Remaining finishers included Jeremy Beddison, Carly Walsh, Rhys Baxter, Mitchell Broome, Luke Weel (who started 13th after getting caught up in an accident in an earlier heat race, causing him to record a DNF), Ben Doukas, Michael Rigby and Steve Hately.

Joining the ill-fated Luke Storer on the infield were Geoff Cook, Marcus Green, Peter Merrett and Chris Halesworth.

Earlier heat-race action saw no two winners claim victory, with wins shared between Halesworth, Luke Storer, Watts, Walsh, Cook and Beddison, while Millar came away with two second-place finishes.

Baxter dominated the B main, leading the 12-lap distance from start to finish and securing his feature-race transfer spot, along with Rigby, Hately and Merrett.

Having clawed back some valuable points on current Super Series leader Weel, a number of drivers will be hoping to continue their recent form heading into the sixth and penultimate Victorian Super Series round at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on the Saturday night of March 18, which doubles as the 50 Lapper.

For their next appearance, the Victorian Wingless Sprints will head to Rushworth Speedway for a club show this Sunday (March 12).
