Last night at the Narrogin Speedway Brendon Wedge survived a race long battle to claim the win in what was round two of the WA Wingless Sprint Series.
Despite the constant threat of rain across the lower part of the State this weekend, twelve cars still made their way to Narrogin Speedway and put on a show for the good crowd in attendance.
The six heat races went the way of six different drivers, an excellent indication of the level of competition of the division. Nathan Walton, Chad Pittard, Daran Humfrey, Brendon Wedge, Ash Hounsfield and Brad Taylor would all score preliminary wins.
As the twenty lap feature race went green, Wedge would take the immediate lead but was closely followed by Hounsfield, the top two pulling away ever so slightly from the rest of the battling field.
Lap after lap, Hounsfield hounded the tail tank of Wedge but couldn’t find a way through, despite drawing alongside him a number of times. Behind them, third placed Daran Humfrey had also closed the gap and was biding his time looking for a way through.
Unfortunately the move wouldn’t come to fruition as the yellows came on for a spun car in turn four, which set up a nose to tail restart, Wedge again leading away and getting a good jump on Hounsfield and Humfrey.
Hounsfield closed the gap in the next few laps, using the highline to perfection to again draw up alongside Wedge, but still Wedge had the edge and was able to keep the nose in front.
Even a close call with lapped traffic that again saw the two side by side didn’t faze Wedge who held his nerve and he would go on to record a good win while Hounsfield had to settle for second and Humfrey third.
The next race meeting for the Wingless Sprints will be at the Perth Motorplex on the 3rd of November.
